How to Explain Relocation in your Cover Letter

Many job seekers find it difficult to prepare a cover letter for job applications abroad. They fear that their decision to relocate might have a negative impact on their application (why does she/he want to leave his/her country?). Or, they fear that their motivation for relocation is not good enough (i.e. they follow their partner in another country). Others, prefer to forget about it and put effort on preparing a great CV and LinkedIn profile.

Whatever the fear or preference, the fact is that recruiters will see who put the work in. The cover letter can only help your application (except in cases where the job post expressly advises against submitting one). The impact of a well-written cover letter can make a real difference between landing a job interview or not. In addition, it is an opportunity to demonstrate your command of language and your understanding of professional etiquette (you never send an attachment to your colleagues without explaining why you send it, do you?).

Here is some tips on how to craft the perfect cover letter for relocation:
Understand your audience:  it is essential to dig into the company’s background, understand the specifics of the role, and get to grips with what they arre really looking for in a candidate. When you tailor your message to match these insights, it doesn’t just show off your skills—it also highlights your dedication and true interest in becoming a part of their team.

Enhancing Value to the Team: Highlight how your skills and experiences make you a strong candidate. It’s a win-win – while this move aligns with your career goals, it also enhances the value you bring to the company’s table.

Personal touch and cultural awareness: Your CV is factual, your cover letter is personal. Motivation and reasons for relocation cannot be stated on your CV. On your CV you do not have the chance to show that you have done the research for the job role, the company and the destination country. In the cover letter refer to how that you understand the country’s work culture and how strong your language skills are. If you are currently improving your language proficiency, mention this as well, demonstrating your commitment to fully integrating and excelling in your new work environment.

Explain your motivation: It is perfectly acceptable to move internationally and is not seen as a negative by hiring managers. When addressing your relocation motivation, focus primarily on career goals and enthusiasm for the company/industry. If your reasons are personal (family in the destination country, fiancé, friends, etc.) state it secondarily as it shows commitment a long-term intend to reside there.  If you are driven by a desire to experience a new culture, simply discuss your cultural compatibility.

Showcase Thoughtful Decision-Making: Showcasing to the potential employer that your decision to relocate is not impulsive but rather a well-thought-out strategy aligned with your professional growth goes a long way in establishing your credibility. If you are willing to relocate with your family (spouse and kids) state this as an additional element as it shows a person with a serious career plan and a well-considered decision. Besides, significant relationships will likely enhance your integration and adjustment in the new environment.

Last power tip: Make an effort to discover the hiring manager’s name and direct contact information, allowing for an even more personalized touch and demostration that you put effort for the application!
Best of luck with your job search abroad!
